Studio — Philosophy
Established 2009
We organise before we shape.
Datum is an architecture practice of eighteen people across two studios. We work slowly and deliberately, and we measure our success in how a building performs long after the photographs are taken.
01 / Philosophy
On method
A building is first a set of decisions about people, ground, and light. Form is the last of these decisions, not the first.
We resist the temptation to begin with an image. Instead we begin with the brief and the site, drawing them until their logic is undeniable. Only then does the architecture arrive — and when it does, it tends to feel inevitable rather than invented.
This is unglamorous work, and we prefer it that way. It produces buildings that institutions can trust with their reputation and individuals can trust with their lives — buildings that reward a second look, and a twentieth year.
02 / Method
Four movements, every project.
01
Read
We study the site, the brief, and the institution before proposing anything.
02
Frame
We define a single organising idea that will govern every later decision.
03
Develop
We resolve structure, material, and detail as one continuous argument.
04
Deliver
We stay through construction, because the drawing is only a promise.
